Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary, and the band gave fans a look behind the scenes with the demo of “The Machine Song”, which later became “Welcome To The Machine”.
“Wish You Were Here 50” is out December 12, and will be available as 3 LP ‘s and 2 CD’s, or as a box set that includes a fourth LP of live material from Wembley Stadium and a Blu-ray of three concert films from 1975 tour.
Wish You Were Here was a tribute to Syd Barrett, who had left the band due to his deteriorating mental health, and in a surprising turn of events, Syd himself would show up to one of the recording sessions, unbeknownst to the rest of the band, since the man was barely recognizable. With a shaved head and over a hundred pounds heavier, the other thought the me might have been a homeless person that got in from the outside, but were shocked to see that it was Syd himself. He watched as they mixed the song “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”, and depending on who you hear the story from attended David Gimlour’s wedding reception which took place after that recording session. No one in the band ever saw him after that day, however which has given even more mystery to the man himself.
